MUSOS PUT THE PRESSURE ON FOR A GAS TAX EXPORT

Calls for a new tax on gas exports have gained real momentum in recent months, triggered by the current fuel crisis and viral content from figures like Senator David Pocock. Climate campaigners have been fighting hard for years on this issue, putting pressure on our government to start prioritising the needs of the people over the interests of the fossil fuel industry.

We rallied over 150 of Australia's most prominent musicians from across all genres to throw their support behind a tax on gas. Missy Higgins, Jimmy Barnes, Ocean Alley, Barkaa, Angie McMahon, Jess Mauboy, Amyl & the Sniffers and King Gizzard – to name just a few – signed an open letter alongside First Nations allies, respected community leaders, over 20 ARIA Award winners, and some of Albo's favourite bands like Lime Cordiale, King Stingray and Ruby Fields.

We reached hundreds of thousands of Australians online and triggered media coverage nationwide – proof that when musicians organise to speak up in solidarity, people listen. Thanks to all the musos who got behind the campaign and who are continuing to speak up about the issues they feel strongly about.

This week's federal budget result is a mixed bag with some welcome reform on housing and tax, but a huge missed opportunity when it comes to making big polluters pay their fair share. But the public pressure coming from all sides means this issue won’t be going away. We'll keep playing our part until we see the change we need.
