CHANGING OUR TUNE.

So you wanna green the music scene? Where do you start?

One of the first things we needed to do when setting out to help the music scene get onto a green footing was research. We needed to find out what and where the environmental impacts were, where we could help deliver the most change, and how we could most effectively drive broad and deep change in the industry.

With the wonderful support of music industry bodies APRA/AMCOS and PPCA, as well as the generous support of Wally de Backer and one anonymous donor, we commissioned this report, Changing our Tune, from the Institute of Sustainable Futures at UTS. ISF researched widely, and interviewed a broad range of music industry representatives, from musicians to artist managers to festival organisers and more, to develop a detailed picture of how the music scene and protecting the environment intersect.

Changing our Tune looks at the music scene piece by piece – artists, artist managers, audiences, festivals, venues, media, etc – and sets out for each of them a general indication of their direct environmental impact, their influence on those outside the music scene, and their internal influence on each other. That gives Green Music Australia the ability to work out how to target our work – aiming to deliver the biggest bang possible with our limited resources.

Green Music Australia and the Institute for Sustainable Futures are looking to do further research in the months and years ahead.
